A single engine Beech airplane crashed upon take-off Saturday evening about 6:35 at Southerfield Airport, killing all 3 on board. The 3 have been identified as 42-year old Robert Brian King, the pilot; 42-year old Manley Darryl Garrison and 28-year old Ryan Jones. All 3 were flying back to Bessemer, Alabama after attending the Electric Fly-in in Americus. Witnesses say the plane took off and the left wing dipped and the plane then just crashed just off the taxi runway, bursting into a ball of flames. Airport workers were immediately on the scene with AFES, Sheriff’s deputies and auxiliary and the coroner’s office not far behind. The Georgia State Patrol was also on hand with assistance. Sheriff Pete Smith said late Saturday night the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board would be investigating the crash. The FAA arrived early Sunday. The bodies were removed Saturday night just before 9pm and taken to Crisp Regional to the morgue there said Coroner Greg Hancock. 2 were immediately identified Saturday night but one body was badly burned and identification was not possible at that time. The investigation is continuing into Saturday night’s crash. This was the first crash with fatalities at Southerfield in over 15 years.

You can help “Stamp Out Hunger” this Saturday. It’s time once again for the 16th annual event sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers. This Saturday, place a sturdy bag of non-perishable food items, such as soup, pasta or cereal, next to your mailbox before your regular mail delivery. Your letter carrier will do the rest. The food will be taken and put in the local food bank. As always, please no glass jars and bottles and no out-of-date food items.  Together, we can make a difference and help Stamp Out Hunger this Saturday May 10th.
